Giving That Lasts: Soi Dog’s Path to Sustainable Support with Omise’s Subscription API

The story of Soi Dog Foundation begins like a romantic movie.

In 1996, a British couple, John and Gill Dalley, got married in Phuket and fell in love with the island’s charm—its turquoise Andaman waters, powdery white sands, and the vibrant, century-old architecture of Phuket Old Town. They made a promise to return one day and retire in this paradise.

And they did. In 2003, at the ages of 53 and 44, John and Gill came back to make Phuket their forever home. But paradise had another side that’s not so romantic: over 70,000 stray dogs and cats roamed the streets, suffering and neglected.

For true animal lovers like them, this was impossible to ignore.

Soon after, they met Margot Homburg, a like-minded soul who had been quietly helping the animals by taking them to be neutered and cared for. Inspired by her dedication, John and Gill joined forces with Margot, and together, they laid the foundation for what would become the Soi Dog Foundation.

Over 20 Years of Mission Pawsible

Soi Dog Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for animals and communities, with the ultimate goal of eliminating stray dogs and cats. They pursue this through several core programs: CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return) to reduce the number of animals born into a miserable life on the streets; Rescue and Treatment; Sanctuary and Rehabilitation; and Ending the Dog and Cat Meat Trade.

Over the past 20 years, Soi Dog Foundation has neutered and vaccinated more than 1,400,000 cats and dogs. “This is a big number, but the impact on communities is even more remarkable and profound, especially considering that just two stray dogs can multiply to over 500 in only two years,” said Boonyawee Yenvattanakul, Director of Fundraising at Soi Dog Foundation.

Since 2003, they have also rescued more than 16,000 dogs and cats from the Dog and Cat Meat Trade. Today, their 12-acre sanctuary cares for around 1,800 of them. “We make sure they’re comfortable, well-fed, and have plenty of space to explore and exercise. We also have an expert who groups the dogs according to their behavior and personality, so they can live together happily and enjoy a better quality of life.”

Donation: Driving Force Behind Non-Profits

None of this achievement would be possible without donations from individuals and the private sector. They are the primary financial lifeline that keeps operations running and missions moving forward. Soi Dog understands deeply that making the donation process as smooth and secure as possible is critical to ensuring steady contributions.

“Before Omise, we used an international payment processor. But after several years, we faced significant issues—from low approval rates that caused donors to abandon their donations (and rarely return), to a lack of responsive support. These problems took a direct toll on the organization’s donation,” recounted Yenvattanakul.

Powering Consistent Giving with Omise

After searching for a payment processor that supports both local and international transactions, Soi Dog Foundation found Omise—and that’s when everything changed. Yenvattanakul told us their approval rate has improved remarkably.

With Omise, Soi Dog Foundation can offer both one-time donations and recurring subscriptions. “Recurring payments are especially important to us. They provide stable, predictable support. That’s why we need a provider we can fully trust. Donors are entrusting us with their payment details for ongoing charges, so security is absolutely critical.”

Omise is the first provider in Thailand to offer network tokenization, a security technology that replaces sensitive card information with tokens issued by card networks such as Visa or Mastercard. This ensures that actual card numbers are never stored or transmitted. Beyond security, it also adds convenience. If a donor’s card is lost, replaced, or expires, the token is automatically updated by the card network. Donors don’t need to re-enter their details, making recurring payments smoother and more reliable than ever.

Subscription donations also help Soi Dog Foundation better predict financial support. “All dog and cat parents know how costly a vet visit can be. Now imagine what it's like for us, with thousands of animals to care for. Knowing how much we’ll receive each month helps us plan ahead and stay on track toward our goals,” she added.

“Omise also provides an incredible support team and an easy-to-use dashboard. It makes training our staff much easier when the technology isn’t complicated.”

This year, Soi Dog Foundation plans to expand to new locations across the country. They now have 19 teams ready to take action. As of July, they have neutered and vaccinated over 200,000 dogs and cats, and treated more than 20,000 of them.

“If you have a chance, please visit our sanctuary in Phuket. Maybe volunteer to walk the dogs. You never know how much you could change their lives,” Yenvattanakul says with a smile, “or maybe one of them can change yours.”
