Adapting to life at Omise

Omise

cover

Working in a good company might not be a goal for everyone, but I think being in a great environment will make my whole life better. 2 years ago, as a new graduate, I was in the lookout for my first job. I lived in Chiang Mai, and I love to stay with my family. At first, I wanted to work in my hometown, but things didn’t turn out as I expected. A senior from my high school years had introduced me to Omise, and that is how I got to know this amazing workplace.

For me, Chiang Mai is a lovely city, and I never thought about moving to Bangkok. What made me change my mind? High salary? Nope, I think “opportunity” is more important. Being in a good company surrounded by skillful people would help me build up a good profile and is also a chance for me to learn and grow. Another factor I considered was the option to work remotely. I am a software developer and Omise lets their dev work from home for 3 days a week. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a lazy person. I just don’t like wasting time in traffic. I know, no one loves that. Then comes the third reason. I make sure that the salary is worth me moving to Bangkok. The compensation after deducting all living costs needs to be more than what I can get if I stayed in Chiang Mai. Finally, I can say I have no doubts applying for Omise Thailand. 😊

First day of work

The first day of work is the most exciting day for a new jobber — scared of doing something wrong to be precise. At Omise, office hours are quite flexible. There is no specific time set to come and leave the office. The People Operations team had informed me that it’s an 8-hour workday, and no need to clock in and clock out. For me, punctuality is important. I count back from when I wanted to leave the office, and then I decided to come at 9 am and leave at 6 pm. Later, I learned that it’s not super strict. Some days, Omisians work a little less than 8 hours, and some days we work for more than 8 hours. The focus is more on the progress of your assigned task, not so much on how much time you spend on work. During the first week, when arriving at the office, I walked around and said hi to people because I wanted everyone to know that I’ve already come in for work. In the end, I found that no one cares what time you come or leave. At Omise, we care more about the working progress. As long as you are productive, you can work anywhere and anytime you want.

What's it like at Omise

As for the office location, Omise is located in an avenue. Many restaurants and cafes surround the office. Moreover, there are supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and a big parking lot. The food price is quite high, but the company also provides a bento service. The bento service is a lunchbox delivery service for those who would prefer to dine-in. It’s also great to help save up as the company pays half. Lunch is only amongst the many perks and benefits we’re offered as an employee here. There are coffee machines, and the fridge is always full of drinks and snacks. What’s more, we receive exclusive, Omisean-only discounts for restaurants and cafes nearby. The only disadvantage here is traveling. The office is not located within walking distance from the BTS or MRT.

Next, the companion here is quite special for me. Many companies have some foreigners, but Omise has many! My colleagues are from all around the world. There are more than 20 nationalities here at Omise. So, if you want to practice your language skills or learn a new language, this is the place to be!. Most of the time, we type in English and sometimes speak English too. And, no matter how bad your English is, people will try their best to understand you.

Why I decided to work at Omise

Then comes the last and the most important reason why I chose to be here. Omise allows working from home. Many companies do not have this option for their employees as they may not have as much trust and are uncomfortable having their employees work off-site. In contrast, Omise allows working from home to help us eliminate the headaches and hassles involved with commuting to work. This means more time can be spent on work-related tasks. For a developer, we usually go to the office at least 2 days per week for meetings, work status updating, and to see and catch up with others. You have the freedom to choose days to come into office and days you want to stay home. I find that, at Omise, everyone is very responsible for their work. When I first started, working from home was not as easy as I thought. At the office, you’re in a proper working environment, and when you see others focusing, you have the motivation too. However, being at home is sometimes difficult to concentrate on work. It took me a while to adjust myself.

Tips for working from home

To work productively at home, you need to understand your working style. Some people are more productive early in the morning, while some work well at night. It’s essential to know if you’re a morning person, night person, or somewhere in between. Next, the working environment is also important. A cluttered space will most likely distract you and disrupt your productivity. Try keeping your workspace organized and you will definitely notice the difference. Next is my own tip. On days when I have many things to do, I will write a to-do list. After finishing a task, don’t forget to cross it out because it will give you a great feeling, a feeling of success! Writing down a to-do list works as a reminder, and also helps to protect you from the distraction of your own thought. In the end, I think as long as you know what you are responsible for or when should a task finish, you will know what needs to be done on that day. If the work isn’t finished, I have no idea where to find a good company like this again.

Lastly, if you think you are talented and embrace a working culture of freedom and responsibility, Omise is a company that you should not miss. Here, you will be able to manage your work-life balance, be in a pleasant environment, have friendly colleagues to work with, and receive attractive compensation. I have been working for almost 2 years and not a day that I regret being here at Omise Thailand.
